Fare Thee Well, LK English

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air:

And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,

The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep. [. . .]

From Shakespeare's The Tempest

When Caliban was lazy and neglected his work, Ariel would come slily and pinch him.

Annotation: [As] The Tempest [1611?] was one of Shakespeare's very last plays, it has been popular to excerpt this speech and interpret it as Shakespeare's own farewell to the theatre. Wikipedia entry on TheTempest

Update:

G.Keillor: A Voice for the Movies

Comment: Let's follow the bard's wisdom hoping that in spite of the "fading pageant" (that even institutional education at least sometimes offers) recollections of our appearances on the educational stage can stand the test of time.                      Heinz Brodeck
