LORD HASKINS, rural adviser to the British government - with Tim
Sebastian
Should farmers in Britain be subsidised? With the European Union
making promises about reforming its Common Agricultural Policy and
developing nations desperate for fairer trading conditions, how long
can the British government justify giving handouts to farmers? When
he was appointed, Lord Haskins upset agricultural workers by telling
them they should be more enterprising, with less of a reliance on
state subsidies. Tim Sebastian asks him about the role British
farmers should play in Europe and whether they have a long-term
future. |
